The Hand Once There

I wrote this poem in September of 2021. It is based on myself and me ex-wife. One of the things that I have fond memories of, when we were married, is holding her hand.

The Hand Once There

I recall fondly holding a princess' hand
It gave me comfort in life unplanned,
Her skin so soft and color fair
I now hold a hand that once was there.

Each night that comes, I rest alone
Fear of future chills the bone,
As I reach my hand out where
I grasp the hand that once was there.

For so long, right by my side
But now my tears of regret I hide,
An awful wrong I now bear
I reach for the hand that once was there.

Bright happiness once cast a beam
That now has become a hopeless dream,
Each morning I awake and wonder where
Lies the hand that once was there.

If only I could change the past
And stand beside a love to last,
My life pages now split and tear
I hold tight the hand once there.

Driving down the road of life
With all its challenges and strife,
A complete life I'd hoped I'd share
Now only a hand, once there.

So I pray for you my friend
Never will you cause true love to end,
For all the things in life you shan't care
When you reach for the hand not there.
